What is Pickleball? The Ultimate Guide for Beginners

Pickleball is rapidly becoming one of the most popular sports around the world. Whether you're new to the game or have heard of it and are curious to learn more, this comprehensive guide will provide all the information you need to understand what pickleball is and why it's loved by so many.

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played on a court similar to a badminton court but with a lower net, and can be enjoyed in singles or doubles formats. The game uses a paddle and a perforated plastic ball, and its rules are simple to learn, making it accessible for players of all ages and skill levels.

History of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three dads, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum in Bainbridge Island, Washington. They designed the game as a fun, family-friendly activity. The unusual name “pickleball” is believed to have been inspired either by Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who would chase after the ball, or by the term “pickle boat,” referring to the last boat to return with its catch.

Basic Rules of Pickleball

  1. The Serve:  Always underhand, always below the waist. You serve diagonally from behind the baseline, and you only get one attempt, no second chances unless the ball clips the net on the way over (that's called a "let").

  2. Double-Bounce Rule:

After the serve, both teams have to let the ball bounce once before they can start volleying. It sounds like a small detail but it completely changes the game. It slows things down just enough to create real strategy and longer, more satisfying rallies.

  3. Non-Volley Zone (The Kitchen):

The 7-foot zone on either side of the net is called the kitchen, and you cannot volley from in there. Step in to volley and it's a fault. Step in to hit a ball that's already bounced? Totally fine. The kitchen keeps the game fair and forces you to actually think about your positioning.

  4. Scoring:Only the serving team can score, and games go to 11, but you have to win by 2. It keeps things competitive right up until the very last point.

Why Pickleball is Popular

  • Easy to Learn: The basic rules are simple, making it accessible for beginners.

  • Social: It’s a great way to meet new people and socialize with friends and family.

  • Health Benefits: Pickleball is a fun way to stay active and improve cardiovascular health, agility, and coordination.

  • Adaptable: It can be played indoors or outdoors, and the court size makes it suitable for smaller spaces.
